Over 50 Solutions to the greatest challenges facing the electoral system in Bulgaria were formulated and analyzed in the second stage of the initiative of MOVE.BG ‘Elections. Towards the Future.’ A team of 20 volunteers locally and from abroad took part in the research and the formulation of possible solutions, under the guidance of mentors Assoc. Dimitar Dimitrov – professor of political behavior, elections and electoral systems at ‘St. Kl. Ohridski,’ and Daniel Stefanov – political scientist and expert in electoral systems.
Besides the recently widely discussed proposals for electronic and mandatory voting in recent years, and the possibilities being majority / preferential voting, there were collected more unusual solutions like: signing a contract between the MPs and voters, regulating the tariff of the media, the elimination of double citizenship, voting authority, and more.
The current status of the electoral system in Bulgaria, the basic problems and all the possible solutions to the current challenges will be summarized in a simple and objective way in the ‘Handbook for Electoral Reform’ at the end of April 2015. In the publication the proposals of the participants will be compiled into a poll on the MOVE.BG website ‘What are the most important solutions to change the electoral system in Bulgaria?’ which will be active until the 31st of March, in which 500 people so far have been involved.
The initiative is a natural extension from the series of discussions from January 2014 devoted to the profile of the Bulgarian voter, advantages and disadvantages of preferential voting, as well as the risks to the introduction of electronic and compulsory voting.
